Sample schedule at the home of Lynn Gamache: Arrival - Wednesday afternoon - meet at airport Home to the homestay home to unpack, have a snack and choose bedroom. Give house tour and explain house rules. Show map of this neighbourhood as well as a Campbell River city map to give an orientation to where we are and what facilities and special sights are close by (e.g. ocean a 10 min walk away, beaver dam a 15 min walk away, Sportsplex and playground an 8 min. walk away, Willow Point shopping and restaurants a 20 min. walk away) Go for a short walk around the neighbourhood. Supper time 5:30 - 6:30 Macaroni and cheese or a rice casserole Evening -- Child early to bed. Go over tentative schedule of daily events with mother using a calendar. Craft: demonstrate how to make pretty gift bags from old calendar pages Thursday Breakfast -- 8:30-9:30 a.m. Demonstrate the mixing up of a batch of bread. 9:30-10:30 a.m. Walk to Sportsplex and visit Day Care and outdoor playground 10:30-11:30 Mother/Tot ESL lesson General vocabulary - Colours - Shapes Use play dough to make objects. Learn to ask: What is it? What colour is it? What shape is it? 11:30 -12:00 Free time while I prepare lunch. 1:00 - 2:30 Rest time for mother and tot. 2:40-3:40 p.m. I do my regular tutoring with Kentaro. Mom and Tot would visit with Ken's mother Miyuki and 2 yr. old baby Julie. (This is a Japanese family. Hopefully if there are any problems or concerns they could be discovered at this time, with Miyuki as an interpreter for the guest mother). 4:00-5:30 p.m. Walk to the beach at Willow Point, weather permitting. ESL Nature Lesson 5:30-6:30 p.m. Home to prepare pizza (from bread dough mixed up in the morning) for supper. Evening - Play Bocce outside or Chicken Foot inside. Mother journals and/or watches a video. Friday - 9:30-10:30 ESL Lesson for Mother/Tot Review previous day's lesson and add new vocabulary as we walk around the house talking about the colours and shapes of things and their uses too. 10:30-11:30 a.m. Family Gym at the Sportsplex and then home for lunch 12:00-12:30 Lunch time 12:30-1:30 Rest time Visit Sunshine Pre-School from 1:30-2:30 if possible 2:30-3:30 Visit our Grandma Gamache and see how she makes/bakes pies 3:30-4:30 Shopping at Willow Point stores for mother while I keep child at the beach nearby 5:00-6:00 p.m Home to prepare a Japanese style meal together while my husband plays with child Evening - Family Night making popcorn, playing games and/or doing another craft Saturday - Day trip across to Quadra Island - Depending on the weather we could go canoeing, visit the lighthouse, art studio, a farm with animals and have a hotdog roast at Rebecca Spit Park ESL Nature lesson by my husband Evening - Mother/Tot alone time after full day away. Early to bed. Sunday - Sleep in til 9:30 a.m. To church (and children's church for the child if over age 2) --10:30-12:00p.m. Home for light lunch Rest time: 1:00-2:00p.m. Drive to Elk Falls and do a hike along the Campbell River and/or Take water taxi across to Quadra Island and explore around April Point Home for a bar-b-que supper of hamburgers Make homemade ice-cream. Monday - Mother/Tot ESL Lesson - Reading stories together - (9:30-10-30 ) then to downtown Community Center for Family Gym (10:30-11:30) Depending on weather, have a picnic lunch by the ocean or go to MacDonald's for lunch Shopping downtown - 12:30--- all afternoon if the mother so desires. I could take child home for his rest time and ESL lesson and return to pick up mother later in the afternoon. Supper - Fish and chips Evening: Walk to beaver dam, bake cookies and/or play games Tuesday - Bake a cake together while child plays Mother/Tot ESL lesson (9:30-10:30) Visit CRCS kindergarten 11:00-11:30 a.m. Lunch time - Rest time - Kentaro comes for tutoring and we go and visit the CR museum together or walk on the fishing pier. Laundry, packing and preparing to leave. Evening: Do baking to take back to Japan with them, play games Wednesday - Morning out to the Sportsplex or walking to the ocean (if time and weather permit) Depart for home!
